Ecuador: Quito’s high-altitude charm, volcanoes, the Amazon, and the Galápagos
At over 2,800 meters above sea level, Quito rises against a backdrop of snow-capped volcanoes, its streets winding between history and high-altitude air. Beyond the city, the Andes unfold into jagged peaks and fertile valleys—perfect terrain for hiking and discovery. To the east, the Amazon hums with life, while far offshore the Galápagos Islands drift in isolation, where diving reveals an underwater world as extraordinary as the wildlife above. Together, it makes Ecuador a country that rewards explorers on every level.

Thanks to its varied landscapes and climates, Ecuador can be explored in every month of the year.
Nature
Baños: waterfalls, adventure, and relaxation
Tucked into the foothills of the Andes, Baños de Agua Santa is Ecuador’s adventure capital—a lively small town where waterfalls tumble from cliffs, rivers cut through lush valleys, and adrenaline activities meet natural hot springs. Whether you’re here to raft down rushing rivers, soak in thermal pools, or simply relax in a garden with mountain views, Baños offers the perfect mix of action and calm. The town itself feels safe and welcoming, and you can walk around easily to explore its cafés, shops, and plazas (September, 2025).
Stay at Mama Tungu
Just outside the center, Mama Tungu is widely considered one of the best places to stay in Baños. Rooms are spotlessly clean, the atmosphere is peaceful, and the property includes a swimming pool, jacuzzi, and a lush garden perfect for unwinding after a day of adventure. Their on-site restaurant serves affordable, home-style meals, and the team organizes excellent tours—including whitewater rafting in one of Ecuador’s most beautiful settings.
A few practical notes: some rooms are located next to the bar and can be a little louder, so if you prefer quiet nights, request a room on the opposite side. The hostel also runs a taxi service into Baños for USD 2.50 (September 2025), making it easy to enjoy the town without worrying about transport. Sports fans will be glad to know you can also catch matches here. To top it off, the hostel is home to a few very friendly dogs that add to the welcoming atmosphere.

Rafting – Baños is famous for its rivers, and Rafting Ecuador is a top choice for safe, professional, and fun trips. The lush scenery along the way makes it just as memorable as the rapids themselves.
Waterfalls Route – A classic Baños activity. You can explore by private taxi or local bus, both safe and easy options. Cycling the route is not recommended, as the road is shared with heavy traffic and can be dangerous. Church of the Virgin of the Holy Water – At the heart of town, this neo-Gothic church is worth a visit. What to do
Birdwatching is the reason many travelers come to Mindo—and it’s easy to see why. The area is one of the most biodiverse birding destinations in the world, with hundreds of species living within a short distance of town. Hiring a local guide makes all the difference, and Mindobirdguide (Irman Arias) is among the best. His deep knowledge and genuine passion for birdwatching turn every outing into an unforgettable experience, whether you’re an experienced birder or just curious to learn. It’s possible to spot the striking Andean cock-of-the-rock, collared aracari, chocó toucan, yellow-throated toucan, plate-billed mountain toucan, crimson-rumped toucanet, common potoo, along with countless species of hummingbirds and tanagers.
Beyond birdwatching, you can explore waterfalls, go tubing down gentle rivers, or simply enjoy slow mornings surrounded by nature.
City
Quito: history, heights, and rooftop views
High in the Andes, Quito blends colonial charm with dramatic mountain scenery. Its historic center—one of the best-preserved in South America—is a maze of plazas, churches, and cobbled streets, while modern neighborhoods like La Carolina offer leafy parks, cafés, and skyline dining. Travelers can spend two nights if they only want to explore the historic center, or extend their stay to four or five nights to enjoy day trips, without needing to stay overnight in Cotopaxi, Otavalo or Mindo.
Stay at Hotel Casa Alquimia
For a quiet hotel in the middle of Quito’s colonial core, Hotel Casa Alquimia is a wonderful choice. This boutique hotel offers calm rooms, attentive service, and a rooftop terrace where breakfast is served with sweeping views over the city. It’s the perfect base if you want to wake up steps away from plazas, churches, and museums.
Stay at The Secret Garden Hostel
If you’re looking to meet fellow travelers, The Secret Garden Hostel is the place to be. Its rooftop bar is a favorite for sunset drinks, and the hostel organizes plenty of activities, from communal dinners to day trips. They also run a sister hostel right by Cotopaxi National Park and arrange excursions to Mindo, Otavalo, and Cotopaxi, as well as a free walking tour of Quito itself.
Stay in La Carolina
If you’re planning to stay a little longer, an apartment or hotel in the La Carolina neighborhood is ideal. This modern area is home to one of Quito’s largest parks, plenty of cafés and restaurants, and a safer, more residential feel. It’s also well-connected, making it a comfortable base for extended visits.
Where to eat
La Caponata – a cozy Italian restaurant set around a leafy patio, perfect for pasta and wine.
La Purísima – another beautiful patio setting, this one specializing in modern dishes with a creative twist.
Los Padmitos – a must for vegans and vegetarians, serving wholesome, flavorful plates.
Panecillo Cocina y Mirador – for something fancier, head to the 17th floor of the GO Hotel in La Carolina for upscale dining with sweeping city views.
Where to drink
The Secret Garden Hostel – the best rooftop bar in Quito belongs to this hostel. Its terrace offers panoramic views of the city and surrounding volcanoes, making it perfect for sunset drinks. Don’t miss the daily happy hour, a lively time to meet fellow travelers before heading out for dinner or joining one of the hostel’s social activities.
What to do
A free walking tour – this is the best way to discover the historic center. Knowledgeable local guides bring Quito’s plazas, churches, and hidden corners to life—often in combination with a chocolate tasting, a delicious way to connect the city’s history with one of Ecuador’s most famous exports (for other tours, see Bacan tours).
Safety in Quito
As in any major city, it’s important to stay aware of the latest situation. Always check official travel advice from your government and ask your hotel or hostel for updates when you arrive. In September 2025, it was advised not to walk around the historic center after dark; instead, take an Uber directly to restaurants or activities. By day, the historic center was safe to explore with common sense precautions.
It’s also recommended to arrange an airport transfer in advance through your hotel or hostel. Pre-booked shuttles or taxis are the safest and most convenient way to get from the airport into the city, especially if you arrive late at night.
