Kitesurfing
Kitesurfing on a Sabbatical: learn to fly (across the water)
There’s a moment in kitesurfing when everything clicks — the kite catches wind, your board lifts, and suddenly you’re gliding over the water like it’s the most natural thing in the world.
But .. learning to kitesurf isn’t something you squeeze into a weekend. It takes time, patience, and a bit of wind magic — which is exactly why a sabbatical is the perfect moment to dive in.
The learning curve is real — and totally worth it
Kitesurfing looks exciting (and it is) and with the right setup and some dedicated lessons, you’ll be up and riding faster than you’d think. Most schools offer intro packages that walk you through kite control, safety, body-dragging, and your first water starts. Go for at least 10 hours of lessons — it’s the sweet spot to get a solid foundation.
You won’t regret it. Learning with professionals also means someone’s got your back when the wind shifts or you wipe out 200 meters from shore (many schools have small boats that come pick you up). Offshore wind in particular can be dangerous without guidance or rescue options.
Top kitesurf destinations for your sabbatical
Cape Town, South Africa
Legendary wind, jaw-dropping views of Table Mountain, and an energetic kitesurf scene. Summer (Dec–March) is peak season. Expect strong, steady wind — perfect for progression. Lessons are widely available along Bloubergstrand.
Tarifa, Spain
Europe’s wind capital. It’s buzzy, bold, and super windy. The Poniente wind is great for beginners; the Levante? Not so much. Take lessons, and let the instructors guide you on the best time to ride.
Aruba
Crystal-clear water, consistent trade winds, and plenty of space to learn — Aruba is an ideal spot for kitesurfing. While the wind can sometimes be gusty and offshore, making lessons essential, certified schools here are well-equipped to handle the conditions. They offer boat rescue as standard, ensuring you’re always safe while you focus on mastering the basics. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to refine your skills, Aruba’s perfect mix of beauty and wind makes it a top destination for kitesurfing.
Alaçatı, Turkey
Flat, warm water and gentle, steady wind make this a beginner’s dream. From spring to early autumn, it’s one of the easiest places to learn — and the town itself is postcard-pretty.
A few things to keep in mind:
- Go for a lesson package (10 hours minimum) — most people need this to feel confident
- Look for certified schools with boat rescue — especially in offshore wind spots
- Use Windfinder or Windguru to track wind conditions wherever you are — the go-to apps for kiters and wind lovers
- Don’t buy gear just yet — rentals are solid and included in most lessons
- Be patient — the first few days are humbling, but the payoff is worth it.
